While on a recent trip to Miami, we decided to skip South Beach and instead headed over to the city’s newest arts and culture capital, Wynwood. We had first heard of Wynwood through a friend on Instagram whose posts were filled with colorfully sun lit murals unlike anything we had seen on the graffiti covered walls of NY.
Wynwood is the vision of real estate developers Tony Goldman and Jeffery Dietch. In 2009, they set out to breathe new life into the blighted neighborhood of Wynwood by commissioning the nation’s best and brightest artists. These artists covered the walls of the old warehouses and buildings with giant murals taken out of the depths of their imaginations.
What we saw when we arrived was a neighborhood made vibrant by an eclectic collection of wall to wall pop art featuring everything from Yoda to Basquiat; and inspiring scenes of people, restaurants, art galleries, and boutiques. It is a cool alternative to the hustle and bustle of South Beach.
